My Grand Cherokee doesn't like to idle when the temp drops to -10 F. It'll turn over but I have to keep my foot on the gas for it to stay on and idle. So...I got to sit with my foot on the gas for about 10 minutes while I waited for it to come up to temp. At least I had lots of layers on.

Not only did I have to wear long sleeves, but I put on a hat this morning for my drive in to work. If I lived where you are I'd even consider putting the top up on the convertible.

I don't even know what this would feel like. -25? NEGATIVE twenty five?

I'm pissed that it's 30 degrees here today.

-20 is getting pretty close to standard design limitations for normal operating conditions. Most engines are designed to run normally down to about -30 but I can see how there's just not that big a difference between -10 and -30.

Maybe get a block heater?

I live in Southern California. What's a winter? Everyone keeps talking about it.

Winter is that week during December or January when the temperature is below 40 (in Houston, at least).

Block heater's not really an option. I have 1 space in my building's garage for my other car, and the Jeep stays outside. As far as I know there aren't any outlets near the outdoor parking lot.

Even though I'm in Wisconsin, temps like this are pretty out of the ordinary.

Weak spark or a dirty throttle body might do that. How many miles on the plugs?

btw, My '95 GC a while back.

No idea, I got it used a little over a month ago and it didn't really have a maintenance history. It's on my list of things to do. First thing I'm gonna try is dump some Heet in the gas tank and see if that helps.

A long time ago I was driving my '98 Blazer through the mountains of West Virginia in December. The thermometer said it was -1 or -2, we were driving in one lane traffic up the mountain on snowpacked roads so the going was slow. The thing that I remember about that trip was that my temp gauge, which usually ran a little over half, was barely over a quarter. I was thankful not to break down that night.

I took this exact same picture. Grand Cherokee and everything. Mine idles fine, though needed some gas to start.

Edit: Minnesota about 8:30am this morning.

I wonder if -25 is the lowest the outside temp gauge will go?

Yeah, and now it's supposed to hit down to 15 or so later tonight. It was like this the week of Christmas, being all humid and shit.

Depending on the year, the 4.7 V-8 didn't have 100k plugs. I'm not sure what year MaMopar got smart, but it wasn't until the mid '00s. If the odo is under 100k, and it's early '00s, you might have lots of plug gap.

That is kind of what I was thinking, although that was right around the correct temp this morning. -45 with the windchill.

It's a '99 with 142k miles on it.

My list of maintenance items I need to take care of includes changing the ATF, transfer case fluid, diff oil & plugs/wires.
